After three episodes, I have to say I’m firmly in the camp of enjoying The Orville. It’s basically an unapologetic love letter to the Trek universe with modern updates and a slightly raunchier humor. Continue reading The Orville

Too much of a good thing?
I’ve been talking to a friend about this some and it got me thinking. With the success the Marvel movies and DC tv series, there seems to be a glut of content available and it might seem a bit much. On the one hand, it seems like there are just a ridiculous amount of those shows available today and you can’t deny it’s the most prolific they have been. On the other hand though, the quality and variety seems to make it palatable. I honestly think what it boils down to most though is I’m too close to and enjoy the source material too much to make an objective call and I tent to notice and consume more than the average consumer. So is it too much? I imagine we’ll start to see it shake out some, but I think quality will still be king. Look at DC, their TV shows have done well, but the movies are being panned because they can’t replicate the magic of Marvel and the variety they represent.
Ads or no Ads?
So I have been finding myself using Hulu more and more and contemplating the option to turn off ads that they offer. For the cost, the time savings might be worth it. I like ads and marketing, but it seems like they have amped up frequency and repetition; probably to sell the no-ads option. That said, I noticed a new type of ad making it’s debut, the interactive ad. The recent Mass Effect Andromeda game is giving an interactive offering on console. If you hit the ‘A’ button, it offers you more info and videos about the game. Just what we need, ads that let you see more ads! Sigh. To pay or not to pay?
Beta Feedback
I’ve been trying out a lot of betas and even a few alphas recently. Some have been very very good (Ghost Recon Wildlands for example) and some have been pretty darn bad (Steep). The one thing that really makes or breaks it though is feedback and reporting mechanisms. Continue reading Beta Feedback
Previously on…
Netflix and the like really need to add in recaps between seasons. It’s great to get a dump of great new content to binge, but when it’s been a while since the last release, remembering who is who and what happened last time can be tough. Sure, it’s a bit of a first world problem, but man would it help.
