Marveling at Marvel’s Dimwittery

So I’ve been a fan of and reading comics for way too long now. In recent years, the number has steadily decreased with the prices, but apparently jacking up the prices wasn’t enough for Marvel so they also decided to cut back on what they offered.

For the last few years or so, to add more perceived value to their comics, Marvel had been giving customers who buy their print comics a digital code for the same comic.  Some users cleverly sold the code on a third market, but a good deal, myself included, just used it to add to their digital collection.  It was a nice feature and it was cool to be able to have it in digital as well as print.  Then out of the blue, last month they took it away.

Well, apparently the move must have caused them some losses  from negative publicity and the bottom line as they announced they would be bringing back this bonus.  I know I basically just gave up on them when they announced this move and started phasing out books as the stories wrapped up.  The thing is, I probably won’t go back.  I’m not going to buy the digital books I missed from their ill-planned money grubbing and even though future books will pick up again, that gap they created in my digital collection is enough of a wound that I just don’t feel like giving them my money anymore.

They pushed too far on the cost per comic and value-add to the point it’s just not worth it. Instead, I’ll read their stuff via their netflix like sub program which costs me about as much as one comic a month anyways. I’ll be a little behind story wise, but you know what, it’s not like people talk about the comics like the latest game of thrones around the water cooler.  Do people even still do that? Plus, less or no physical comics will save me room in my basement.
